Hitting pause: the ultimate night in

Burn out. It happens to all of us, especially in the fast paced world we’ve come to accept as normal.

I am a strong advocate for taking it slowly. After a nasty health scare earlier in the year I have been forced to slow down and make time for self care.

We seem to pride ourselves on how busy we are. It’s almost like a contest to see who has the least amount of time for themselves. Being constantly busy can equate to success at work, a thriving social life or a fulfilling existence. For some people, being “on” all the time is the only way they can enjoy themselves. Some people just don’t do down time. If that’s you and you’re happy, all power to you.

But if you find yourself feeling sluggish, waking up tired, getting sick constantly and longing for the weekend you NEED to factor in some regular time out into your week. It could be 3o minutes to practice yoga, it could be a few hours to cook a delicious evening meal.

If you really want to commit to the chill out cause try and factor in at least an entire night a week devoted entirely to you. Whether you’re working full time or travelling the world, there is no reason why you can’t slow down for a little while.

Here’s my guide to the ultimate night in.

Bath tub

Step one: set the scene

Create a space you’re going to feel relaxed in. Close the curtains, light some scented candles and put on some relaxing music. Run a bubble bath, pop in a bath bomb or some salts and feel your muscles relax. If you don’t have a bathtub, don’t fret! Having a soak in the shower with some luxury body washes and soaps can be just as relaxing. Singing in the shower optional… but not really… bust out some Adele like you know you should!

Face masks

Step two: pamper yourself

Never underestimate the power of a good face mask, a hair treatment or a nice massage (if you have a willing volunteer masseuse that is!) This doesn’t need to be an expensive exercise, you can buy cheap but soothing face masks for a few dollars at most pharmacies or grocery stores.

If you haven’t had time to head to the shops get creative and make your own! There are loads of DIY face masks online using ingredients you’ll probably already have at home. Avocado, honey and coconut oil can be mixed together to create a deep moisturising mask, and an oatmeal mask is great for acne.

Daggy socks

Step three: embrace the daggy

This step is important. Now is not the time for tight, restrictive or fancy clothes, as nice as they may be. Pull out your old favourites; the embarrassing pyjamas, the fluffy socks and the daggy dressing gown. The only person to judge you will be your housemates or the food delivery guy and frankly I’m sure they’ve seen worse. Incidentally, these charming socks pictured above were purchased at a Christmas market in Krakow. They are like wearing clouds. Or a sheep on each foot.

Food

Step four: go for the comfort food

I am not suggesting you spend the night eating a family sized block of chocolate and a bag of potato chips (but if you’re having one of those days, go right ahead). But unless cooking relaxes you, chill out night isn’t the right time to trial complicated recipes. Either stick to the tried and true recipes you know and love or order some of your favourite take away. Treat your insides as well as your skin and try and incorporate some veggies and fruit into the meal: it will boost your energy levels and your body will thank you for it.

That’s it! Now all you need to do is sit back, watch Netflix, read, write in your journal or do whatever it is you love to do. Try and switch off from social media for a while for some real “you time”. Giving yourself the chance to recharge is so important, so stop making excuses and have a time out!
